How we Help Your Child (Ages 8-12) Declutter Their Room for a Fresh Start
"Learn proven strategies to help children ages 8-12 declutter their rooms before a makeover. Make organizing fun while teaching valuable decision-making skills."
There's something magical about a room makeover—but before, start we work with the children to declutter their rooms. For kids ages 8-12, decluttering can feel overwhelming, but it's also a perfect opportunity to teach decision-making skills and create excitement about their new space.
Here's how to make the decluttering process productive and even (dare I say it?) Fun!
The vision:
Before diving into the mess, we sit down with the child and talk about what they want their new room to feel like. Do they want a cozy reading nook? More space for hobbies or a place to play? A calmer environment? When kids understand why they're decluttering, they're more motivated to let things go.
We let the kids know we will be setting a timer.
It makes the task feel manageable. When kids look at a messy room, it can feel endless and overwhelming. A timer creates a clear endpoint—"We're just doing this for 30 minutes"—which makes starting much less daunting. They know exactly when they'll be done, rather than feeling trapped in an endless chore.
After about 30-45 minutes, their decision-making gets harder and they become frustrated.
Set Clear Categories
Kids this age think more concretely than adults, so we give them specific categories instead of vague instructions like "clean your room." Using these four simple groups:
Keep – Things they use and love
Donate – Items in good condition they've outgrown and want to give to another child
Trash – Broken or unusable items
Maybe – When they truly can't decide (but limit this box!)
Give back – We often find children visit parents or siblings and may have items they want to give back to them.
Get five boxes or bins labeled with these categories. The physical act of sorting makes the process tangible and gives them a sense of progress. At this point we ask the kids if they want to continue to help or if they would like our team of volunteers to continue.
